CHAPTER SIX
GENE LOOKED AT the results in front of him. His heart sank into his shoes. No. Please, no.
A new collection of patients were being screened for their suitability to take part in the next trial. He’d met all of them over the last few days, all at varying stages of disease with their cardiomyopathy. All patients required extensive workouts, medical history and a whole array of tests before they could be accepted on the trials.
Lea Keller was a Swiss national in her twenties. She’d been lucky. She’d played professional sports and her condition had been picked up in her teenage years.
But staring at the test results meant that Gene was going to have the difficult conversation he’d spoken with Cordelia about just the other day.
He gestured to Marie. ‘Can you call Lea Keller in, please?’
Marie took only a few seconds to pick up on the expression on his face. ‘No problem, Dr Du Bois. I’ll get her straight away.’
Lea appeared in his office a few minutes later. She gave Gene a wide smile. Cardiac patients were generally very smart. ‘Don’t tell me, I’m anaemic again?’
Gene kept his face impassive. Anaemia would be easy to deal with—this was not.
‘Take a seat.’ He gestured to the seat opposite him.
He could see the flicker across Lea’s face. She perched on the edge of the seat, her hands clasped nervously on her lap.
He sat opposite her and put his hands on the desk. ‘Lea, I have some test results we need to discuss.’
‘What is it? Heart failure? Thickening?’
He shook his head. ‘No, no. It’s something quite different.’
Every female of child-bearing age who was a potential candidate for the research study had a whole battery of tests completed—including a pregnancy test. These were new medications, and even though they had been thoroughly researched, there were very strict rules about suitability of patients. No research study wanted to expose a growing foetus to a new type of untrialled medicine. The risks were just too high. Gene took a deep breath and kept his voice steady. ‘You’re pregnant.’
‘I’m what?’ Her voice sounded small. Almost squeaky.
For most women this would be one of the greatest moments in their life. But for Lea this had so many more repercussions.
‘You’re pregnant.’ He said it again, keeping his voice as steady as he could. ‘Obviously I’m not your normal cardiac physician, neither am I an obstetrician, and the best advice I can give you right now is that you need to speak to both.’
‘I’m pregnant.’ She said the words out loud again as if she was trying them for size.
Gene stood up and walked around the desk, leaning against the other side and putting his hand on her shoulder. He gave her the best supportive smile he could. He had no idea what was spinning around in her head right now.
She looked up with pale golden eyes. ‘How pregnant am I?’
Gene spoke calmly. ‘I can’t tell you for sure. Like I said, I’m not the expert in this, but the test results indicate around six weeks.
